Camping and the Internet

Sometime ago I had read on the Internet of a way to keep fruit-flies or wasps at bey when having a picnic.

This past weekend my son and I went camping with our Y-Guide tribe to the Arbuckle Mountains in SE Oklahoma. While there the bees seemed to have come-out in force.

Recalling what I read, I thought I'd give it a try and let the boys join in, so here's what we did:

(1) Take a plastic bottle (0.5 L or 2 L) and cut the top part off (the part where it starts to bow in);
(2) pour a little (about 2cm) Dr. Pepper to provide an attractive sugary destination;
(3) Place the cut-off top part inverted into the open portion of the bottle, much like a funnel upside down (make sure the plastic cap is off); and
(4) wait (KEY!) for the bees to arrive.

We did 1-4 with 0.5L water bottles and left about 6 around the campsite while we went for a 2 hour hike. When we came back each averaged 8 bees!

Very exciting. We made sure to free the bees before we left, despite someone's suggestion to throw the bee-filled bottles into the camp fire. Boys.
